International Journal of Postharvest Technology and Innovation AAPHCE

Call for papers: AAPHCE 2023: Special Issue on: "Innovative Solutions for Food Loss and Waste Reduction in Africa"

AAPHCE 2023: Special Issue on: "Innovative Solutions for Food Loss and Waste
Reduction in Africa"
Guest Editors:
Prof. Olaniyi Fawole, University of Johannesburg, South Africa
Prof. Jane Ambuko, University of Nairobi, Kenya
This special issue aims to provide a platform for researchers, academia, practitioners, and policymakers to
share their latest research findings, experiences, and insights on innovative solutions for food loss and waste
reduction in the African context. It presents an opportunity to showcase and disseminate best practices,
innovations, technologies, and strategies that have been proven effective in reducing food loss and waste in
sustainable food systems.

It will feature original research articles, review papers, and case studies based on the themes of unpacking
food loss and waste, preserving the harvest for food and nutrition security; the role of postharvest
management in facilitating trade and market access; capacity development of food supply chain actors;
policy action, strategies, and partnerships to reduce food loss and waste in Africa.
The readership of this special issue includes researchers, academics, policymakers, food industry
practitioners, NGOs, development partners, international organisations and other agro-food actors with
interests in postharvest management, food and nutrition security, and sustainable agriculture in Africa. It is
expected that the publication of this special issue will stimulate further research, collaboration, and
innovation in postharvest management and contribute to achieving set targets for food loss and waste
reduction. These include halving postharvest losses by 2025 and 2030 under the African Union's Malabo
declaration and the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, SDG 12.3, respectively.
Overall, the special issue aims to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date understanding of the challenges,
opportunities, and innovations in postharvest management with a focus on food loss and waste in the efforts
to achieve food and nutrition security in sustainable food systems and promote intra-African agricultural
trade.

The Guest Editors will be inviting substantially extended versions of selected papers presented at the 4th All
Africa Postharvest Congress and Exhibition (AAPHCE2023), for review and potential publication, but are
also inviting other experts to submit articles for this call.
